This push brought water into homes, but often through materials we now know to be hazardous, like lead pipes. Quality wasn’t the primary driver; widespread access was.

The period from the 1950s to the 1970s ushered in the era of Water 2.0. This phase was driven by public health and industrial-scale solutions like widespread chlorination and desalination, delivering disease-free water to the masses.

But as water became safe, it also became a product. Thus bottled water exploded into a global industry now valued at over $300 billion, built not just on safety, but preference for taste, carbonation and flavour.
